Before you buy: will Windows 11 run on this PC?

Windows 11 has stricter hardware requirements than Windows 10, so this is worth thirty seconds of checking:

• TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot enabled, with UEFI firmware
• A supported 64-bit processor, 1 GHz or faster, with two or more cores
• 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of free storage as the minimum
• A DirectX 12 compatible graphics adapter

Three ways to use this key

1. You already run Windows 11 Pro and need to activate it

2. You run Windows 11 Home and want Pro

3. You run Windows 10, or you are installing from scratch

If your PC meets the requirements above, you can move from Windows 10 to Windows 11 directly through Windows Update or Microsoft’s Installation Assistant, keeping your files and applications — a clean install is not required. If activation does not go through

Most problems come down to one of three things, and all three are quick to settle:

• Type the key rather than pasting it. Some builds strip the hyphens on paste and then reject the key.
• Check which edition you are on. A Pro key will not apply to a machine already running Pro, and Home Single Language builds sometimes refuse an in-place edition change. Run winver to see your edition, or read how to check whether Windows is activated.
