If changing your Windows 10 product key from Settings gives an error — or simply doesn’t stick — you can change it from Command Prompt (CMD) instead. It only takes one command. This guide shows you how, plus how to fix the most common error.
How to Change Your Windows 10 Product Key via CMD
- Open Command Prompt as administrator (right-click Start → “Terminal (Admin)” or “Command Prompt (Admin)”).
- Type this command and press Enter:
slmgr.vbs /ipk YOUR-KEY
(replaceYOUR-KEYwith the product key you received from us). - Your product key is now installed. To activate online right away, run:
slmgr.vbs /ato - Restart your computer to finish.
To check your activation status at any time, run slmgr.vbs /xpr.
Fixing Error 0xC004F069 (Non-Core Edition)
If you see “0xC004F069 on a computer running Microsoft Windows non-core edition…”, you most likely have Windows 10 Home and are trying to apply a Pro key. Non-core editions can’t be upgraded to Pro directly with a key change — you’ll need to install Windows 10 Pro with a clean installation. Follow our clean installation guide. Prefer not to reinstall? Contact us and we can try upgrading your Home edition to Enterprise instead.
When Should You Use CMD?
The CMD method is handy when the Settings → Activation screen rejects your key, freezes, or doesn’t change the edition. The slmgr command applies the key directly at the system level, which often succeeds when the graphical method fails.
