Visual Studio Professional and Enterprise are paid editions, and after installation you have 30 days to unlock the software before it locks you out. If you bought a standalone product key, unlocking it takes about a minute. Here’s exactly how to do it in Visual Studio 2026, 2022 and 2019 — plus what to do if the key won’t apply.
Before you start
- Visual Studio is already installed. If not, grab the installer from our software download links page.

- Your key matches your edition. A Professional key will not unlock Enterprise, and vice versa.
How to activate Visual Studio 2026
- Open Visual Studio 2026.
- From the top menu, choose Help → Register Product.
If a banner is showing that your trial has expired, you can click that instead — it opens the same window. - In the Visual Studio Account dialog, click Unlock with a Product Key.
- Paste your 25-character key into the box and click Apply.
- Click Close and restart Visual Studio.
One thing that is new in 2026: the IDE updates monthly and separately from your build tools. Applying your key is a single step — monthly IDE updates do not ask for it again, and they do not change your .NET or C++ compiler versions.
How to activate Visual Studio 2022
- Open Visual Studio 2022.
- From the top menu, choose Help → Register Product.
If a yellow “your trial has expired” banner is showing, you can click that instead — it opens the same window. - In the Visual Studio Account dialog, click Unlock with a Product Key.
- Paste your 25-character key into the box and click Apply.
- The dialog now shows your license as applied. Click Close and restart Visual Studio.
That’s it — the trial countdown disappears and the full edition is unlocked.
How to activate Visual Studio 2019
The steps are identical, and the menu is in the same place:
- Open Visual Studio 2019.
- Go to Help → Register Product.
- Click Unlock with a Product Key.
- Enter your key and click Apply.
- Restart Visual Studio.
Professional or Enterprise — which key do you need?
Check Help → About Microsoft Visual Studio; the edition is on the first line. Your key has to match it.
- Professional — the standard paid edition for individual developers and small teams: full IDE, debugging, profiling and CodeLens.
- Enterprise — adds the advanced testing and architecture tooling (Live Unit Testing, IntelliTest, Code Map, advanced debugging). Available for 2026, 2022 and 2019.
If you installed the wrong edition, you don’t need a new key — you can change editions from the Visual Studio Installer, then apply your key.
If your key won’t apply
- “The product key is not valid” — almost always a typo or an edition mismatch. Copy and paste the key rather than typing it, and confirm your edition under Help → About.
- Nothing happens when you click Apply — close Visual Studio, reopen it as administrator (right-click → Run as administrator) and try again.
- You’re offline or behind a corporate firewall — Visual Studio needs to reach Microsoft once to validate. Connect to a normal network and retry.

Do I need a Microsoft account to activate Visual Studio with a product key?
No. “Unlock with a Product Key” applies the licence directly. Signing in is optional and only needed for settings sync and subscription benefits.
Can I use one Visual Studio key on two computers?

Where is the Register Product option?

Will a Visual Studio 2019 or 2022 key work on Visual Studio 2026?
No. Keys are version-specific: a 2019 key unlocks 2019, a 2022 key unlocks 2022, and a 2026 key unlocks 2026. The edition has to match too — a Professional key will not unlock Enterprise.
